Sikika has been conducting budget analyses for the past 5 years. The purpose of these analyses is to gather as much information as possible about all public funds and resources available for the health sector.  

Medicines and medical supplies availability and accessibility are among the pre-requisite conditi on for the provision of quality health services in health facilities.

Transparency and participation in the budget process are important strategies for sustainable development. To play an active role in the realization of their basic rights, citizens need to have access to information and opportunities to hold local authorities accountable for the delivery of public services.

A local Social Accountability Monitoring (SAM) team in Kiteto district, revealed some shocking findings affecting the welfare of Tanzanians in 16 health facilities visited recently.

Transparency is vital for an effective and accountable government, especially at the local government level. It engenders the trust of citizens who demand services, as well as increasing the accountability of civil servants and local government officials.

For the past 6 years, Sikika has been analyzing the health sector budget by giving objective recommendations to the government on areas where it could make improvements and by occasionally commending it for good decisions that improve health services for the Tanzanian citizens. 

In November 2012, Sikika invited stakeholders in pharmaceuticals’ procurement and supply system from various parts of the country, to take part in a one-day stakeholders’ meeting to brainstorm on challenges facing the procurement and distribution of medicines and medical supply systems in the public sector and to provide recommendations on how to address the identified challenges.  

In Tanzania, medical doctors undergo five-years of intensive university training, largely financed by public resources, after which they take a ‘modified’ Hippocratic oath and are awarded a Doctor of Medi- cine degree.
